How it works
A car goes live
An Essex owner who wants to sell to verified dealers lists their car with photos, mileage, MOT history and any relevant notes on its condition. You also see the guide valuation we gave them, so you know what they are expecting before you bid. It’s a guide, not a fixed price.
You bid
Bidding runs to a set closing time. Bid in increments or set a maximum and leave it. We also ask sellers to set an asking price they would sell at today, so you can offer that in full and it goes straight to them.
Highest offer goes to the seller
When the clock stops, the highest offer goes to the seller and they have 24 hours to accept. Once they do, a message thread opens between you and them to arrange inspection, collection and payment.
What you can see before you bid
Most listings carry photos, mileage and the owner’s own notes on condition, along with MOT history, service stamps, previous keepers, engine size, fuel and transmission, whether the car has been an insurance write-off, and whether the V5C is in the seller’s name.
It depends what the seller gives us, so not every car has everything. What you can always do is ask the owner before you commit, and inspect the car yourself before you pay.
What’s in the auction
Cars come from private owners right across Essex — Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Basildon, Southend, Brentwood, Harlow and Romford.
They are not trade stock. No part-exchange disposals, no fleet returns, no cars that have already been round the lanes twice. Every car is somebody’s own car, usually sold because they are replacing it.
A car listed today goes into the next sale. Sales run through the week and each one stays open for a couple of days, so there is almost always something to bid on — and nothing to attend or travel to.
Tell us what you buy
Set your makes, budget and mileage once, and we’ll email you when the right car lands. No need to watch the site.
What it costs
Registering is free. Browsing and bidding are free.
If you win a car you pay a buyer fee based on the sale price. You see the full fee brackets as soon as you are verified, and we keep them competitive. Nothing is hidden and nothing is added later.
There is no entry fee, no subscription, and no charge for bidding on a car you don’t win.
Every dealer here is vetted
Before anyone can bid we check the business and the person running it: company or trading details, and an identification check on the account holder.
That works for you twice over. Sellers list here because they know they are dealing with experienced car buyers, which is why the cars are here at all. Your details are not shown to the seller until your offer is accepted. And you’re bidding against other motor traders, not against the public.
Paying and collecting
Once your offer is accepted you arrange collection and inspection. You offer the seller three preferred dates, so it can fit around your week. They can suggest a different one if none of those suit.
Inspect the car properly and take your time. You are dealing with the person who owned and drove it, so if you want to ask about the service history or that mark on the wing, you can. If something turns up that genuinely affects the value and could not have been seen in the listing, you can propose a revised price.
Then pay the seller directly.
How this differs from a physical auction
- Remote viewing. Bid from the forecourt or your phone.
- Nothing to attend. Bidding is online and closes at a set time.
- You see more before you bid. Photos, mileage, MOT history and the owner’s own description of the faults.
- Private cars, not trade stock. You’re not bidding on something another dealer has already turned down.
- You can speak to the owner. No disposal desk in between.
- Final inspection before you pay. Nothing changes hands until you have seen the car.
Eight reasons dealers buy here
The stock is the reason you came. It isn’t the only reason dealers stay.
Questions dealers ask
How often do cars go live?
Sales run through the week and each one stays open for a couple of days, so they overlap and there is almost always something to bid on. A car listed today goes into the next sale.
Do I have to attend anything?
No. Everything is online, and collection is arranged directly with the owner.
Does the highest bid always win?
You get first refusal, and the seller has 24 hours to accept or decline. It is their car, so the sale is theirs to confirm — much like a provisional bid at a physical sale, except you hear back within a day.
Do I know what the seller wants for it?
Yes. Every listing shows the guide valuation we gave them when they came to us. It is an indication of what they are expecting, not a floor — cars sell above it and below it.
Can I just buy it rather than bid?
Where a seller has set an asking price, yes — offer it in full and it goes straight to them to confirm, which pauses bidding for everyone else while they decide.
What if the car isn’t as described?
Tell us. The seller’s description, photos and MOT history are all recorded against the listing, and we’ll deal with it.
Who are the sellers?
Private owners in Essex who came to Sell My Car Essex for a valuation and chose to let dealers bid instead of taking a straight offer.
How quickly can I collect?
As soon as payment clears and the owner is free — usually within a few days.
